Koru Team News: Term 3 Week 9

Kia ora e te whānau, We hope you are all having a lovely weekend together with your families! We have been very busy in the Koru team over the past fortnight: we've had some very exciting new outdoor equipment arrive, and the children have been having fun experimenting with its use we've had two fun Learning Through Play themes: 'Puppets' and 'Shops' and the children are continuing to make great progress in their Literacy and Maths learning! Thank you so much for your support with this at home - it makes such an enormous difference. It has also been wonderful to see our tamariki independently unpacking their bags, putting away their lunchboxes and drink bottles, and putting their folders in the correct reading folder containers each morning. We appreciate and thank you for your continued support with this. We would like to say a very warm welcome to Finley who started school last week. It is so lovely to have Finley in the hub with us. Koru Term 1: Weeks 5 & 6

Kia ora whanau! Bounce and Skip Some of you may have had the pleasure of meeting our class friends, Bounce and Skip. These two monkeys are experts at handwriting and have been teaching us how to strengthen our hands, fingers and core so that we can become neater, quicker writers. We are now experts at these exercises so please ask us to show you. The more we practice, the stronger we become! Writing by hand engages the brain in learning and especially activates the “reading circuits” of the brain. Using the results of modern brain imaging techniques, research suggests that writing by hand plays a substantial role in the visual recognition and learning of letters, a foundation for both reading and writing. Through studies using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to probe how the brain processes stimuli in real time, researchers have demonstrated that there is a distinct system in the human brain that is recruited during reading that is also recruited during writing

Term 2 Week 10 Koru News update

Kia ora, whānau, It's hard to believe, but yes - it's the final week of term! The children are thoroughly enjoying the last few days before their break, and are over the moon to be able to play and explore on the new playground area beside Pūkaki. It's absolutely beautiful and very inviting for the wee ones. Joining Our Friends From the Ferndale Hub for Play-based Learning: From time to time, the tamariki from the Ferndale Hub join us for Play-based Learning. This week we were invited into their learning spaces to explore and play. We had so much fun and can't wait to go back! Reminders: Tomorrow we're going to be baking Matariki star biscuits. A big thank you to the parents who have offered to help us - we really appreciate you! ...and on Friday, we're going to be making popcorn.
